National Changing Diabetes Programme

Novo Nordisk's National Changing Diabetes Programme (NCDP) aims to improve standards of diabetes care in both developed and developing countries. A top priority is to get diabetes on the public health agenda in order to drive earlier diagnosis and treatment.

The NCDP helps build national healthcare capacity and develop national disease strategies based on partnerships with various stakeholders. The programme is spearheaded by Novo Nordisk through its affiliates. Activities include educating nurses, doctors and patients, supporting diabetes patient organisations, equipping diabetes clinics, and working with governments.

Performance 2006

Case story: National Changing Diabetes Program in the US

In the US the diabetes figures speak for themselves. According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in three children born since the year 2000 will develop diabetes at some point in their life if nothing is done to change the current situation. Furthermore, according to a report by Yale University Schools of Public Health and Medicine, the disease is estimated to cost the US 351 billion dollars (298 billion euros) by 2025 in direct medical and indirect societal costs, more than double the amount currently spent.

With a million-dollar commitment, Novo Nordisk launched the National Changing Diabetes Program in the US in late 2005. It will work to remove barriers to chronic disease management, create new incentives for better diabetes care, enhance medical training for diabetes and chronic care, and help people with diabetes manage their condition more effectively.
Performance highlights from NCDP activities in the US in 2006 include:

  • Initiation of a study on how federal agencies impact diabetes
  • Launch of a national website to share best practice
  • Raising employer awareness of the impact of diabetes on employees’ health
  • The formation of regional action committees in six cities across the US
